Why BC Children's Hospital?

  • BC Children's Hospital is the province's only full-service hospital dedicated to providing advanced specialty and sub-specialty care to close to one million children living in BC and the Yukon.
  • In 2012, over 81,000 kids from across the province and territory made over 216,000 visits to the hospital.
  • Surgeons at BC Children's Hospital clocked 13,474 hours in our operating rooms last year.
  • 1,087 children were treated in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. 
  • 42,624 patients were seen in our 24-hour Emergency Department — that's about 120 kids daily.
  • Every day 600 seriously ill and critically injured children visit BC Children's
    Hospital for treatment
  • 1,180 premature infants and critically ill newborns were cared for in the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
  • 187 open-heart surgeries were performed; 49 per cent of which were performed on patients younger than one year old.
  • 7 kidney transplants were performed in the Renal Clinic, which provides the most
    comprehensive renal care for children in Western Canada.
  • 137 children were newly diagnosed with cancer.
  • 25 children underwent a bone marrow transplant at BC Children's Hospital.
  • 9,355 oncology, hematology and hemophilia outpatients visits
    were made to BC Children's Hospital.
  • 437 babies were born at BC Children's Hospital with cardiac conditions.
  • Over 74,202 diagnostic imaging exams were performed by the Radiology Department.
